First Ever Christmas Bird Count for Pagosa Springs

12/22/11

On January 2, 2012, a brand new Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will be conducted in and around Pagosa Springs, in SW Colorado. Organized by the local Audubon chapter, Weminuche Audubon Society, the count will cover 14 zones within a 15-mile-diameter circle centered on Trujillo Road near downtown Pagosa Springs. Beginners and experts are all welcome to participate in the CBC. Stay-at-home feeder-watchers within the count circle can also contribute valuable data. For more information or to join the count, contact Beverly Compton via email or by calling (970) 731-3471.

Each year since 1900, Audubon members and bird lovers across the continent have given one day of their holiday season to tally every bird they can find within pre-determined count circles, contributing valuable data to bird studies worldwide. It’s also a lot of fun! For information on other CBCs in Colorado, or to register for a CBC, visit the following Audubon website and click on Colorado: https://netapp.audubon.org/cbcregistration

Enhancing South Platte River Riparian Habitats

8/16/11

Audubon Colorado has a long history of conserving birds and their habitats throughout the state. Recently Audubon CO acquired a grant to conduct habitat restoration and bird monitoring along the South Platte River in the Fort Morgan and in Denver area following an ecological contamination along the river in the past. This project will enhance areas along the river that are home to native plants and wildlife. Plantings of native fruit producing shrubs will provide critical food sources for birds during the breeding season and sustain them through migration. In addition the importance of restoring native vegetation and removing invasive plant species will ultimately aid in water quality enhancements as erosion is reduced, herbicide use will decrease and long-term management will also likely decrease. As valuable as riparian ecosystems are to wildlife, they also offer important recreational and educational opportunities to the community. Enhancements to the riparian areas and providing education through construction of interpretive signs and increased community involvement will keep the South Platte native and natural.

To learn more about the South Platte River Restoration Project or ways to get involved, contact Angela Mangiameli via email and find us on Facebook.

Biologist Angela Mangiameli speaks at a Brown Bag Lunch meeting at the Fort Morgan Museum. These presentations occur once per month and are free to the public. Audubon Colorado is starting a project along the South Platte River in Fort Morgan and Denver and hopes to reach out to the community of Fort Morgan to connect folks to birds and their habitats.
